Baby monitor
A baby monitor made from two iPhones.
One stays by the cot. The other is yours. Coming to the App Store this autumn.
How it works
Stand one phone by the cot
An old iPhone is perfect. Plug it in and point the camera at the cot. iOS doesn't allow the camera in the background, so its screen stays on, dimmed almost to black.
Pair it once
Scan the code on its screen with your phone. After that the two find each other on your Wi‑Fi by themselves.
Keep yours by the bed
You see the room and hear it. When crying, a smoke alarm, breaking glass, a door or a dog is heard, your phone tells you.
Answer from your phone
Hold to talk back, turn on a soft night light by the cot, or play the sound of rain.
Your nursery stays yours
Sounds are recognised on the phone by the cot and nothing is stored on our servers. Away from home, video and sound go encrypted from phone to phone.
Bought once
Pairing, live video and sound at home, alerts and talking back are free, with no time limit and no account. One purchase adds watching from away, with three nights free to try, past nights with recordings, two rooms at once and all the soothing sounds.
Vela is not a medical or safety device. It helps you keep an ear on the room; it can't take the place of looking in on your child.
Questions
Vela is still on its way to the App Store. Here's what people ask about it.
Which iPhones does it work on?
Any iPhone with iOS 17 or later, for both the phone by the cot and yours. Vela is iPhone only.
Does it need an account or a subscription?
No. There is no account, and the paid part is a single purchase, not a subscription.
Why does the phone by the cot keep its screen on?
iOS doesn't let apps use the camera in the background, so Vela keeps the screen on and dims it almost to black.
Can I watch when I'm not at home?
Yes, with the one-time purchase. The first three nights away from home are free to try. Video and sound go encrypted from phone to phone.
